Winter Wellness – Keeping your mind as healthy as your body

Posted in Wellness on Jul 13, 2026

At the moment, the mornings are icy, the sun seems to take its time arriving, and suddenly everyone becomes an expert at finding the warmest spot in the house. It's also the season where "I'll start tomorrow" sounds far more convincing than it does in summer.

While we often focus on keeping our bodies warm during winter, it's just as important to take care of our mental wellbeing. After all, our minds are responsible for every decision we make—from managing our daily responsibilities to making important financial choices. When we're tired, stressed or overwhelmed, our ability to think clearly can be affected. We may become more impulsive, lose motivation, or avoid making decisions altogether. Sound familiar? If you've ever stared at your to-do list while wrapped in a blanket convincing yourself that a nap is the most productive option, you're certainly not alone.

Just as we service our cars before a long journey, our minds also need regular maintenance.

One of the simplest ways to improve mental wellbeing is by slowing down. Winter naturally encourages us to spend more time indoors, making it the perfect season to build healthier habits. A short walk during your lunch break, even on a crisp winter's day, can improve your mood, boost energy levels and help clear your mind. Fresh air and natural sunlight—even in the middle of winter—remain some of the most effective ways to recharge.

Quality sleep also plays a vital role in our overall wellness. While it's tempting to stay up just one more episode into your favourite series because "it's too cold to do anything else," consistent sleep helps improve concentration, emotional resilience and decision-making the following day.

Nutrition shouldn't be overlooked either. Comfort food certainly has its place (few people would argue with a warm bowl of soup on a cold evening), but maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated supports both physical and mental performance. Surprisingly, we often drink less water during winter because we don't feel as thirsty, yet hydration remains essential for focus and energy.

Perhaps most importantly, remember to disconnect occasionally. The constant stream of news headlines, market updates and notifications can leave anyone feeling mentally exhausted. Taking regular breaks from your phone or computer allows your mind to reset and helps you focus on what truly matters.

Winter also offers a wonderful reminder to reconnect with the people around us. Share a meal with family, catch up with friends over a cup of coffee, or simply spend quality time with those who make you laugh. Human connection remains one of the greatest contributors to emotional wellbeing—and laughter, as they say, is still one of the best ways to warm up a room.

At 1.618, we believe that true wealth extends beyond financial success. It includes good health, meaningful relationships, peace of mind and the confidence that comes from living a balanced life. When you take care of your wellbeing, you're better equipped to make thoughtful decisions, navigate life's challenges and enjoy the rewards of the future you're working so hard to build.

So this winter, be kind to yourself. Wear the extra jersey without apology, enjoy the occasional hot chocolate, take a break when you need one, and remember that investing in your wellbeing is one investment that will always deliver lasting returns.
