As we move closer to the financial year end and the festive rush - we start filling our diaries with appointments, buying gifts, making plans to spend time with the people that we love. But we often lose sight and forget to take care of the most important thing, and that is our loved ones' financial well-being.

When we think about financial planning, the first things that come to mind is investment and creating wealth, but we don't actually also take into consideration risk protection and ‘are our loved ones protected?’

Questions that we need to maybe think about and ask ourselves is,

  • “If I had to pass away today, would my loved ones know where to find all my information?”
  • “Is there a contact person that they would need to contact in terms of where to find everything and what the next steps are?”
  • “Do I have an updated will when last was that checked?”
  • “Are the beneficiaries right?”
  • “Have things changed?”
  • “Have wishes changed?”
  • “Would all my debt be settled?”
  • “Would my family be debt free in the event of me passing away?”
  • “If something happened to me where I got a disease or an injury, would we still be financially secure in terms of living the current lifestyle that we are currently living?”

These are all important questions. They're difficult questions. It's sometimes difficult to approach these subjects and look into ourselves and ask these questions. But that's why it's super important to have this conversation with your financial planner. To have these front of mind and ask these sort of questions.

Do another financial needs analysis in terms of: Am I at the right place financially in terms of risk protection. Like I said, it's an uncomfortable question and sometimes it's things we shy away from, but at the end of the day, it's about securing the fact that you've worked so hard to create what you currently have that you want to make sure that you're protecting that from all avenues. Whether it's an illness, you passing on a disability etc.; these are important questions to have and it's not just about creating the wealth but it's also make sure you're protecting that wealth for yourself and for your loved ones.
